Episode 76: Jennifer Walker

Jennifer Walker from Moms On Call joins me again for Episode 76. She sat down with me for Episode 6 way back in the beginning of the show. What Jennifer and her colleagues at Moms On Call offer is so helpful! I have been having conversations offline with Jennifer since my oldest was 6 weeks old. And I always walk away feeling confident and capable and encouraged. And I want you to experience the same thing. So, I invited her back to the show to talk specifically about surviving toddlers. She answered some of your questions about discipline, meltdowns and sleeping through the night.

Takeaways From Our Conversation:

  • I hope you were encouraged by this conversation. If you are a parent or guardian, it is important to hear someone speak truth over you—to encourage you that @@you are capable and that God has chosen you to be the parent of that child@@. I’ll be honest, I wanted to hand in my resignation from motherhood letter earlier this week. Some phases are hard. Some phases feel like an eternity. And feeling like you aren’t equipped to handle the situation or child in front of you is demoralizing. But the truth is, God will fully equip me with what I need. He knows me fully and fully knows my kid. So, if you have had moments like me where you wanted to resign from motherhood, then I hope you know that you are not alone. And I hope that this episode was an encouragement to you.

  • When it comes to whatever hardship you are facing in parenting, it's important to establish the truth. For instance, take sleeping through the night. They (or you) are afraid. FEAR. What’s the truth? This kid is in a loving, safe environment. They will be fine to sleep through the night.

  • When it comes to discipline. Use bedtime as an opportunity to reinforce what they are to do and who they are. Go over your household rules before bedtime (Obey the first time; Don't hurt yourself; Don't hurt others.) Talk about what was great about today, then talk about the one thing you’re working on together. Kids like to have an identity. That gives them a structure. "This is what we do because we are ___." "We are kind, brave and wise because we are Bragg's."

  • HUG moment (hug, use a confident face, give positive feedback)

  • @@Your child’s behavior is not an indication of your self-worth@@. Jesus death and resurrection is an indication of your self-worth. Anything that we feel like was a mistake, Jesus has redeemed it. He doesn’t speak to condemnation. Close your heart to the voice of your own condemnation. He makes glory out of weakness.
